KNOWING THE JAVA CATFISH, THE ORIGINAL INDONESIAN CATFISH THAT WAS KNOWN IN HIS OWN HOME
Javanese catfish or people often call it Kampung catfish is a catfish which has the scientific name Clarias batrachus. And comes from the family Clariidae.
For its own physical characteristics, it has a maximum length of approximately 21.5 ++ Cm. Its body shape is cylindrical and its skin is smooth and dark gray-black in color (although sometimes there are red, white, and striped ones) and its head is flattened with four pairs of barbels. which serves as a touch tool.
The habitat of this fish is found in fresh water for example in rivers, rice fields, muddy swamps and ponds.
Just like other catfish species in general, this fish includes omnivores, the main food is small fish, worms, and aquatic plants around the river. and usually active at night alias Nocturnal.
The fact of this fish is that besides being able to walk on land by using its fins and tail to move from one pond to another.
Patilnya has a venom, namely Crinotoxin. or the effects of the poison can make swelling, numbness, and pain.
Crinotoxin toxins enter the human body in large quantities can cause weakness or loss of consciousness.
however, more often than not, the sprain is only temporary and the swelling is temporary.
For the distribution of its life, the Javan catfish spreads from countries in South Asia to countries in Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, it is only found in Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan.
And now, for Java catfish, only endemic spread on the island of Java.
the population status is still Least Concern, aka Low Risk by IUCN, or not a protected fish species.
Even so, currently its population in the wild is threatened, this is due to our lack of awareness of protecting the natural ecosystem, namely releasing fish species that are not native to Indonesia, such as the Dumbo Catfish (Clarias gariepinus).
As a result, now the Java catfish is rarely found due to competition which causes the Javan catfish to lose competitiveness and be eliminated from the wild.
In addition, not so many people cultivate local catfish, besides the food is more wasteful, also the growth is slow not as fast and the body size is not as big as Dumbo Catfish.
